On a slope

On Saturday, at about 5:20 PM my family and I were making our halting way from the truck towards the back door, when I noticed that the sky was still full of light, which it would not have been a month ago. I stopped by our back door and looked out towards the West, and I could feel some kind of balance changing. It took my breath away. Light swelled against night as though the brightness had built up behind some kind of dam and was ready to break through. I felt as though we were on a slope that would send us all sliding into spring, and it made me want to shout as though I were at the highest point of a roller coaster.

I did not shout; I just stood there, full of awe, and smiled.
